  • Gluten-Free Ensure the BBQ sauce, ketchup, and any broth used are gluten-free. Most natural ingredients in the recipe are inherently gluten-free.

Can I Use Store Bought Broth, Or Should I Make My Own?

Both store-bought broth and homemade broth can be used in Brunswick Stew, but each offers different advantages:

Store-Bought Broth

  • Convenience: Quick and easy, especially for impromptu cooking sessions.
  • Consistency: Brands generally maintain a consistent flavor and salt level.
  • Variety: Options include low-sodium, organic, or bone broths.

Homemade Broth

  • Roasted Vegetables: A simple tray of roasted seasonal veggies can add color and nutritional value to the meal.
  • Garlic Bread: The aromatic flavor of garlic bread can complement the meaty, spicy profile of the stew.
  • Steamed Rice: For those who prefer a lighter side, steamed rice can soak up the stew’s flavors.
  • Mixed Green Salad: A fresh salad with a light vinaigrette can offer a refreshing contrast.
  • Biscuits: Soft, fluffy biscuits can add comfort and warmth to the meal, perfect for absorbing the stew’s flavors.

Storage And Make Ahead

  • Refrigerator Storage: Store leftover Brunswick stew in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
  • Freezer Storage: Brunswick stew freezes well. Allow it to cool completely before transferring it to a freezer-safe container. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
  • Make Ahead: Brunswick stew can be made ahead of time and reheated when ready to serve. Follow the recipe as usual, allow it to cool completely, then store it in the refrigerator or freezer as mentioned above.
  • Reheating: Reheat Brunswick stew on the stovetop over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Alternatively, you can reheat it in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until heated evenly.
  • Additional Tips: If the stew thickens upon reheating, add a little water or broth to reach your desired consistency. Adjust seasoning as needed before serving.

What Can We Do With Leftovers?

  • Shepherd’s Pie: Use the leftover stew as a hearty filling for a quick shepherd’s pie, topped with mashed potatoes.
  • Taco Filling: Spice up some tacos using the stew as a meaty filling.
  • Stuffed Peppers: Fill bell peppers with the stew and bake until the peppers are tender.
  • Pasta Sauce: Mix the stew with tomato sauce and serve over your favorite pasta.
  • Pot Pie: Encase the stew in puff pastry for a makeshift pot pie.
  • Stew Omelette: Incorporate into an omelet for a filling breakfast.
  • Stuffed Bread: Hollow out a baguette, fill it with stew, top with cheese, and bake.
  • Rice Bowl: Serve over steamed rice and garnish with herbs for a quick rice bowl.
  • Skillet Nachos: Use as a topping for nachos; add cheese and broil.
  • Fritters: Combine stew with a batter, form into small patties, and fry.

Tips

  • Meat Selection: Use a combination of smoked meats like pork, chicken, or even beef for a rich, smoky flavor. Leftover barbecue meats work great in this stew.
  • Vegetable Variations: While the classic recipe calls for lima beans, corn, and tomatoes, feel free to add other vegetables like okra, potatoes, or carrots to suit your taste.
  • Barbecue Sauce: Choose a barbecue sauce that complements the smokiness of the meats. You can use store-bought or homemade sauce for added flavor.
  • Simmer Slowly: Allow the stew to simmer slowly to allow the flavors to meld together. This can take anywhere from 1-2 hours, but the longer it simmers, the better the flavors will be.

Savor the richness of Brunswick Stew, a Southern classic that melds tender meats with a medley of vegetables. This hearty stew offers complex flavors in each bite, making it a go-to comfort dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon 1 Olive Oil

  • 1 Cup 1 Onions (Finely Chopped)

  • 2 2 Celery Stalks (Finely Chopped)

  • 1.5 Pounds 1.5 Ground Pork

  • 1.5 Pounds 1.5 Ground Beef

  • 3 Pound 3 Whole Chicken (Cooked, Deboned, And Shredded)

  • 14.5 Ounces 14.5 Canned Tomatoes

  • 1 Cup 1 Ketchup

  • 0.5 Cup 0.5 Barbecue Sauce

  • 1 Pinch 1 Salt

  • Pepper (To Taste)

  • 1 Teaspoon 1 Hot Sauce (Adjust To Preference)

  • 1 1 Green Bell Pepper (Chopped)

  • 14.75 Ounce 14.75 Cream-Style Corn

  • Okra (Optional)

Step-By-Step Directions

  • Sauté the Onions And Celery
The first thing you need to do is heat a little cooking oil in a large skillet. While the pan is heating up, chop your onions and celery into small pieces.
Once you are done, toss the onion and celery into the pan. Allow them to be sautéed until they are nice and soft.
  • Add the Beef And Brown it
Add the pork and beef to the pan and cook them until they are evenly browned. Don’t drain the fat once the meat has been cooked through evenly.
  •  Heat The Meat In A Big Stock Pot
Once your beef and pork have been browned, heat them in a big stockpot and set it on low heat. Take care not to put the temperature too high, as your meat has been cooked to this state.
  • Add The Chicken, Tomatoes, Ketchup, And Barbecue Sauce
Before you add your chicken to the pot, ensure that the meat has been adequately shredded and that there is no bone or skin. Once your chicken has been shredded, add it to the pot.
Followed by your chopped tomatoes, ketchup, and barbecue sauce. Stir all your ingredients in the pot until everything is nicely combined.
  •  Add Your Hot Sauce And Seasoning
Add salt and pepper to the mixture. Add enough to suit your tastes. On top of that, you should now add your hot sauce to the mixture. Once again, stir the mixture until everything has combined.
Once you are happy with the level of seasoning, you can move on to the next step.
  •  Chop And Add The Green Pepper
Grab your green pepper, gut it, and chop it into small, manageable pieces. Once you chop your green pepper up, add it to the mixture and allow it to cook with the remaining ingredients.
  •  Let Your Stew Simmer
With that, you must let your stew simmer for about two hours. Every so often, stir your stew to keep it from sticking. You will know your stew is ready for the next step when your stew has thickened up.
  • Add Cream-Style Corn
You can add cream-style corn once your stew is nice and thick. Stir it into the mixture until it has been incorporated.
  • Simmer for an Hour
With the cream-style corn in the pot, let the mixture simmer for about one hour. You can let the stew simmer for more or less time. This step is all about getting your stew to the right consistency.
When you are satisfied, you can move on to the next step.
  • Keep or Remove the Green Pepper
At this point, you can remove your green pepper if you like. Alternatively, you can leave it in and enjoy it as part of the stew.
  •  Serve Your Stew and Enjoy!
With that, you should be ready to enjoy your delicious Brunswick stew. Scoop it into your bowls, add a garnish and side if you wish, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Feel free to adjust the level of spiciness to your liking by modifying the amount of hot sauce. You can also make this stew ahead of time; it freezes well, and the flavors meld beautifully when reheated.
